New Work: St. Petersburg

A brand-new portfolio is now online - featuring 36 photographs from the Russian city of St Petersburg and it's surroundings - taken during the intense 2009-10 winter. Russia known for it's cold winters, hasn't seen such a brutal winter itself for decades, with record-breaking snowfall and temperatures below -25°C in St Petersburg. According to media reports, St Petersburg hasn't seen that much snow in the past 130 years. This series was planned for several years, but due to the lack of snow in the past years, I had to postpone it several times. The results are overwhelming, and I think it is one of my best and for me one of the most important portfolios I have created. Solo-Exhibitions in Paris and Switzerland

Two solo-exhibitions opened in early April - both will run thru end of May and feature a wide selection of my work. Prints in various sizes are on display. The exhibition in Paris (at Acte 2 Galerie) is my first solo-show in France, and it is also one of my largest exhibitions I had so far. The gallery is very close to the famous Avenue des Champs-Elysees and Arc de Triomphe. The exhibition in Switzerland (at AD-Galerie) has fewer prints, although it stretches over three floors and is only minutes from the scenic Lake Geneva.

Unleashed 3 + Iceland

Iceland book - Second Edition

Originally published in late 2006, the Iceland book sold out in less than a year. Signed copies of the first edition were sold for more than $250 on eBay shortly after. We had plans for the re-print since 2007, and now finally, the long-awaited second edition is in production - and as a bonus, it also features previously unpublished Icelandic work. Having already seen a first unbound copy, I can promise the new edition will surpass the first one in printing quality. Jet Airliner

Well hello there, I would like to invite you to view my most recent body of work called "Jet Airliner". These photographs are real, live-action, wide-angle captures of arriving and departing airplanes at the Princess Juliana International Airport in St. Maarten, Dutch West Indies. The airport is one of the busiest in the Caribbean, and even large passenger airplanes such as the Boeing 747 and the Airbus A340 land there. But still there are only a few landings per day, and the 747 lands just twice a week. The whole series "Jet Airliner" was made with my Hasselblad SWC, which is nearly as old as I am. While one can make multiple exposures within a second or two using a digital camera - I was only able to make one shot per plane, which isn't that convenient as these aircraft are coming along with some 250 km/h, even shortly before landing. NYC Solo-Exhibition

I'm very happy to annouce that my first New York City solo-exhibition will kick-off with an opening reception tomorrow, April 16th, at 6PM. I will be attending the opening. The show features several of my best-known landscape photographs, including from Japan and Iceland. The exhibition runs until June 13th at the famed Bonni Benrubi Gallery. It is one of the finest photography galleries in NYC; and it is located in the Fuller Building at the corner of 57th Street and Madison Avenue - just a few steps from the glamorous 5th Avenue.

Dubai Photographs

In early January, I spent some time in Dubai, photographing new work - especially Cityscapes. The series shows world-renowned buildings and projects, such as The Palm Islands and The World Islands, the Burj al Arab hotel; the Sheikh Zayed Road with it's lined-up skyscrapers, and the Burj Dubai, the world's highest building. A big thanks to Elie, director of a newly-opened gallery in Dubai, for arranging me several things there! Elie's gallery, The Empty Quarter Gallery, will show my work in a solo-exhibition later this year. The exhibit will also include some of the new Dubai stuff. New Work from Hawaii - Now Online!

It was relatively quiet along the shores of the Big Island in Hawaii for quiet some time. But since early March of this year, lava from the Kilauea Volcano flows down again to the coastal plains - which produces new land for the island - and makes the Big Island even bigger. Now when the red lava meets the Pacific Ocean, giant steam plumes rise high in the sky - this makes it so magnificent and absolutely unique to Hawaii. I photographed the phenomenon from land, water and air. Beside the lava flows, there's currently the top-most crater of Kilauea Volcano smoking. About 2 months ago, the Halemaumau Crater saw it's first explosive eruption since 1924. A white plume currently issues from the vent - and I was lucky enough to get some shots.

Solo-Show in London

I'm very excited about my upcoming solo-exhibition in London at ATLAS Gallery. The show is scheduled to kick-off with an opening reception in the evening of December 5th - I will be in attendance. The exhibition will run until end of February 2008. ATLAS will have a large number of prints from Iceland, China, Japan, Yemen, Deep South and Vietnam. Signed copies of my newest book "Unleashed Two" will be also available for purchase. ATLAS Gallery is located at 49 Dorset Street (Baker Street) in W1U 7NF, London.

Solo-Show in Berlin

After a very successful solo-exhibition at the prestigious Camera Work gallery in Berlin earlier this year - a second solo-exhibition in Berlin will open December 2nd, 2007 - at the Galerie 206 of the luxury-goods-mall Quartier 2006 at the shopping-district at Friedrichstrasse (near Brandenburg-Gate). Big parts from my Deep South, Iceland China works will be on display. The gallery also has it's own bookshop - they will have my books as well. The exhibition will run until end of February 2008.

Los Angeles, CALIFORNIA - August 16, 2007 - The Pilsner Urquell International Photography Awards today announced winners of the 2007 competition. Over 45,000 entries from over 100 countries making IPA the most important photo competition out there. Austria-based photographer Josef Hoflehner wins the main-category "Nature" and was named "Nature Photographer of the Year"

Josef Hoflehner is now also nominated for a "Lucie" at the 2007 Lucie Awards at the Lincoln Center in New York City on October 15, 2007. The Lucie Awards in the photography world are the equivalent of the Academy Awards (Oscars) in the motion film industry. The award ceremony is a glittering mix of photography, media industry insiders and Hollywood celebrities. Previous honorees include Henri Cartier-Bresson, Elliott Erwitt, Ralph Gibson, and William Klein.
